Charlie X, an old bud and network marketer, called me today because his fast growing company needed a kick-butt trainer. He mentioned that oh, btw, “I’m now earning $20,000/week. Here are 9 recruiting jobs you must know how to do, drunk or sober, day or night:
1. Identify and seek out YOUR audience.
2. Know which online and offline approaches work for you, to reach them. Use approaches and language that is consistent with who you are (not some upline or other person whom you are not)
3. Stand out by taking advantage of who YOU are (you need never act like you’re someone else)
4. Talk the way YOU talk, in YOUR voice, so that others who are waiting for you, hear your call
5. Tantalize folks with language that is FTC safe, yet excites them about the possibilities of joining the business with you.
6. Describe the money in 2-3 sentences that any 13-year old can understand.
7. Describe the product you market in language any 13-year old can understand.
8. Bring your ego. You’ll need it. Otherwise you won’t think that what you’ve done, or what you have to offer, will be of interest to others.
9. Expect to work at it at least five years – to systematically test and do these things until you become super skilled like a Navy Seal or professional tennis player. A network marketer with such advanced skills will be in charge of her own future. You ready?

Car dealerships want to sell more cars, restaurants want to serve more people, newspapers want more readers, and television stations want more viewers. The more customers a business has, the more money that business stands to make. Unfortunately, revenue streams are declining, not expanding, in the current economy. Businesses have to find a way to reach more customers, and they often have to do so while facing declining profits. It is a tough problem to tackle, but fortunately, network marketing offers a solution.
The process of network marketing can be something as simple as informing people about your company through word of mouth. However, that method isn’t exactly the most efficient for most businesses. Lately, I’ve been reading The Warren Buffett Way by Robert G. Hagstrom. Hagstrom writes about the fascinatingly simple principles that have guided Warren Buffett’s decision making in investing over that past 60 years that have allowed him to accumulate such immense wealth.
Warren Buffett’s formula for investing fundamentally has not changed since his first fund was established over 50 years ago. Buffett never gets distracted by fads or promises of explosive returns. So called experts have often criticized him for his stubbornness and his “old fashioned-ness” and yet he’s always had the last laugh when their bubbles burst.
Whether he’s buying stocks or buying entire companies, he has the mindset that he is going to keep that business forever. Therefore he looks at the business both quantitatively and qualitatively to be certain that he’s making the right decision.
Some say, Buffett spends 8 hours a day at his office, reading annual reports and trade journals with the goal to make just one good investment decision every year. Just one!
He does a ton of research on a company and its executives to make sure they both have integrity because he wants to be certain that what he invests in will continue to grow and prosper long into the future.
In the book The Warren Buffett Way, Robert Hagstrom writes…
“He looks for companies he understands, with consistent earnings history and favorable long-term prospects, showing good return on equity with little debt, that are operated by honest and competent people…”
Network Marketers ought to use the same approach when it come to choosing the company they want to build their long term residual income with. Work hard and build it once. Then enjoy the lifestyle. That’s the Big Promise of MLM. You DO NOT want to have to build it over, and over again.
If you just want to build it once, there are three things that are critical to your long term success in an opportunity.
1. It’s important that you understand the business model of your company.
2. It’s important that your company has consistent earnings and its products have long term residual value.
3. It’s important that your company is run by good people who are honest and have integrity.
Unfortunately, most people are building their MLM businesses “by gosh and by golly” without understanding any of these fundamental aspects.
The strange thing about this business is not many people do their due diligence on an opportunity that could dramatically change their life. They think “Oh, it’s just a hundred bucks to sign up… what have I got to lose?” It doesn’t become apparent until they lose the downline that they’ve worked so hard to build.
Too many people are attracted by the hype and the glitter and because of that, too many people have been burned in this industry by start up companies that explode and then collapse after two years.
Too many people have had their dreams destroyed by scams disguised as legitimate network marketing opportunities because they didn’t understand the business model and they didn’t know the guys running the operation were crooks.
The third point is the most important. The company has to be run by good people with integrity, with distributor’s interests at heart.
When looking at your next opportunity be sure to know who’s at the helm. Look at their history. This will really give you a good insight as to whether the opportunity is a scam, and if the company will be around for the long term. If the executives of the company are not listed on the company’s website, RUN!
Thankfully, today you have a very powerful tool to assist you in doing your due diligence. It’s called GOOGLE. Please use it.

Looking for ways to tap into this almost effortless style of business promotion? Here are eight easy steps you can follow:
1. Choose Topics Outside Your Niche
As hard as it may be to swallow, you are not your niche. A niche is something you have. But it is not who you are. Choose 5 other things you could possibly Tweet about. On my list are cooking, origami, personality tests, colors, and office supplies. Find more opportunities to Tweet and talk about other things than what your business is. Getting people to like you first is a great place to start on Twitter.
2. Define the Personality You Want To Reach
Thanks to David Meerman Scott we have the concept of buyer persona and a method for applying it to marketing. Thanks to the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, we have a tool for getting inside that buyer persona’s mind. It was easy for me to choose ENFPs (Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Perceiving) as my target market. They’re the types who get lots of ideas and are natural entrepreneurs but struggle with things like internet marketing implementation. 4 little letters can give you a lot of potential Tweet ideas.
3. Use the Search Button at Least 3 Times Per Day + Tweet at Least 15 New People
Lots of Twitter help articles will say “Join the conversation!” but if the people you’re following don’t seem to engage in conversation and only promote themselves or send out quotes for Re-Tweet bait, what are you supposed to do? That’s where the search button comes in. Search for something you’re interested in. Find someone you’d like to talk to. Then repeat as much as possible. Use your @ function more than anything else. Engage, don’t broadcast.
4. Ask 5 Questions on a Daily Basis
Once you start to find more followers, just ask questions. Will they always get answered? No. But did it cost you a ton of money to ask? Absolutely not. You can’t take it personally if no one answers the first time around. But if you’re focusing on your buyer persona, you get closer to getting inside their mind. You’ll know you’re asking the right questions when you start to get responses. Easy to do, easy to measure.
5. Answer at Least 3 Questions Daily
The fewer questions someone has on their mind, the more at peace they are. Questions, especially ones that don’t get answered, are the things that keep us up at night. Though it might seem extreme to say, it’s very likely that anytime you answer someone’s question via a Tweet, you’re helping them sleep better at night.
6. Send Out 10 Useful or Entertaining Links (But Be Sure To Track!) Every Day
While desktop applications like TweetDeck or Twhirl offer convenient URL shortening, they are not necessarily the best. You’re missing out on one of the best features of Bit.ly and other URL shortening tools like it: click tracking. This is the simplest way to find out if you’re Tweeting things that your Followers actually want to know about. Just sign up for Bit.ly’s service and Tweet from there when sharing articles and blog posts.
7. Share at Least One Blog Post, Article, or Video Per Week
There are so many options for connecting your blog posts, articles, videos, and all your content to your social media venues. But self serving promotional content just doesn’t cut it. Remember the question theory? Use it to your advantage. Think of the questions your target market (or even better, your buyer persona) has and make sure your content answers those questions. Provide content that makes it easier for that person to sleep at night.
8. Test a Different Landing Page from Your Twitter Profile Weekly
If you’re doing everything above, you’re getting closer to people being more interested in what you have to offer. What will they find when they visit you? Are they going to know exactly how you’re going to help them sleep better at night? If not, you need to create landing pages that express just this. As with all good landing page practices, keep on testing.
